Gap c. 1670-1685
We already have record of the burial of Ellen Janney,May 17 1686(p.3 report 25 June 2013)

Your notes from 11 February mention the marriage of Margaret Janney to Josiah Tomplin-I see this on the IGI,29 May 1674.I will have to check this again from the Bishops transcripts-unless it appears on the page I was able to copy including Rebecca Janney's baptism in 1673? Otherwise it could be that the reference comes from a marriage licence.

The Janneys are mentioned several time elsewhere in the Tale of Ipstones; it is noted that William Janney was listed as '8 hearths' in the 1665 Hearth Tax.There are also the following slightly vague references:

p.3 Janneys of Ipstones

p.44The Booths Hall & farm was the seat of the Janneys & subsequently of the Pyotts.Marriages are mentioned 1567....(these seem to refer to Pyotts)
'Old deeds mentioned a Janney being buried at Ipstones 9th  Jan. 1566 and the will of William of ye Booths,Gentleman, is dated 1677.......'

I believe you already have a copy of William's will. It would be worth checking the wills indexes at Lichfield for any very early Janney wills-the staffsnames indexes online index only goes back to 1650.
It may also be worth looking for earlier wills of Sherwins-it looks as though the Sherwins owned Hay House Farm at one point (Hay House and Booths Hall are both off Belmont Road in Ipstones). The staffsnamesindexes website certainly lists a James Sherwin of Hayhouse,Ipstones, yeoman, 28 April 1696.
Similarly,at Lichfield,I would suggest checking the ongoing indexes of marriage licences-sometimes marriage bonds have survived when the original marriage record has not. There is currently an ongoing indexing project-it will be a while before this is available online, but if I speak to the right member of staff they will usually look up an individual surname for me,plus some of the early records are already indexed.

Quarter Sessions Rolls

I have begun to look for references to Janneys (all variant spellings) in the above documents, using the names index. The first 'batch' have been transcribed in the Staffordshire Historical Collections volumes.

1581-9  (1929 volume)  No Janneys.

1586 (1927 vol.)   No Janneys

1590-3 (1930) No. 19- Presentment (QS Rolls Trinity ,33 Eliz-1591)
John Ratcliffe late for Fole.lab.,for entering a common at Ipstones called Morrege(Fellow) 18 May 33 Eliz.(1591) at about 9pn and for stealing & carrying off a bay horse of the value of 40s then grazing there,it being the property of John Janney.
Endorsed: witn. John Gennye (sic.)

1594-7 (1932 vol.) No Janneys

1598-1602 (1935 vol.) No Janneys.

1603-6 (1940 vol.)  No Janneys.

1608-9 (1948-9 vol.) No Janneys.

Apparently the William Salt Library at Stafford holds transcriptions of the rolls from  1607-33,but I have not as yet had time to look at these. These could be of particular interest as the catalogue indicates that for the years 1616/7 the rolls include an 'assessment of the inhabitants of Ipstones,Kingsley, etc, for the repair of Froghall Bridge'

Some other references to Janneys
As you have found, there are a number of references to Janneys in deeds and other documents at various Record Offices. There seem to be a number of documents relating to Ipstones at Derbyshire Record Office which may well be worth looking at,but will take some time to go through, both for Janneys and other related families. Among these is a reference to 'Janneys Barne' as below:

p.4 Janneys of Ipstones

From the National Archives'A2A' website:

D231M/T739 1709/1710
These documents are held at Derbyshire Record Office

Contents :
Fernihough family estates in Staffordshire: Copy feoffment by Philip Fernihough of Middle Cliff in the Parish of Leek to William Slack of Ipstones, yeoman, in consideration of £70, of all that edifice or building called Janneys Barne part of which is lately converted into a house and a parcel of land meadow or pasture known as Cromwillies, 9 acres by estimation and two closes upon a piece of land called Josneh Marshes - all in Ipstones 6 Mar.

I am making inquiries locally to see if anyone has any knowledge of this building-my husband thinks he has heard of it.There is a place called 'Crumwithies' on Ipstones Edge.

Sleigh* has a short tree recording that William Janney of ye Booths,s&h of James Janney (who was living in 1664) and Ellen his wife, married Rebekah and by his will of 1677 had a sole heiress , his daughter Mary who married Richard Stych of Heywood Park  (The IGI has the marriage of Maria Jenny to Richardus Stych,24 Oct. 1694 Baswich,Staffs, just over a month after Rebecca married William Gent. This looks to be the right area-assuming it is the same Mary. Richard Stych of Walton,Baswich, yeoman, left a will proved 17 May 1717 ).As I recall William Janney in his will of 1677 actually made provision for both his daughters,Rebecka and Mary.

There do also seem to have been a number of Janneys in Prestbury and Macclesfield.
I also found the reference below to James Janney in the 'Bednall Archive',which appears to be a private collection of documents,as below:

67

Brownedge, Caldon, Ipstones, Padwick, Parkhall, Staffordshire;
Grant by John Whitehall of Parkhall, Staffordshire, Sampson Fynney of Caldon, Staffs., and James Janney of Ipstones, Staffordshire to John Taylor of Fearnyhill,  Staffordshire, of a close of land of the waste and commons called Morridge within the manor of Ipstones at a place called Brownedge, dated 14 October 1658. The document cites the purchase of the close of  waste and commons by Ralph Turner of Padwick,  from the trustees of the "Ancient Tenants" and other purchasers of  property near Ipstones, from William Fowler, Sir Orlando Bridgman, John Saunders Dr of Physic. A dispute had arisen between the purchasers of this property and the Viscount Fitzwilliam which was sorted out by "the mediation of friends" and a fine had subsequently been levied between the parties. Vellum (1 sheet), signed and  sealed.
Whitehall; Taylor; Turner; Fynney; Fowler; Janney; Bridgman; Fitzwilliam; Saunders; Hollins; Heath;

This document most probably refers to James Janney (d.1663)who married Ellen. It is interesting to see Ralph Turner of Padwick mentioned in the same document.

                                         Janneys-further notes

At the William Salt Library in Stafford I looked at the quarter sessions rolls  for January 1616/7 referred to on p.3 of my report on the Janneys of 4 March 2014:

Epiphany seesions 14 Jas. I  -Roll 54 ( transcript)
A third assessment of the parishes of Ipstones & Kingeley(sic.) for the repair of Froghall Bridge, made 7 Jan. 1616/7 by the justices whose names are subscribed with the assent of Thos.Henshaw,John Janny,John Thornbury,John Sherwine,Henry Forde,Wm.Snow and Henry Grundy.Collecters Wm.Homersley and Ric.Forde.

List for Ipstones includes (relevant surnames only listed)
Jas. Sherwind 12d
Henry Grundy 5 ½ d
Jas.Sherwine 12d
John Sherwine 12s
John Janny 17  1/2d
John Grundy 6 1/2d
Jas Grundy 1d
Jas Turner 2s (highest amount)

Kingsley includes (as above)
Thos.Henshaw 3s 0d
Thos.Henshaw for Wolsayes farm 7d

Whiston,Eves & Lees includes
Thos. Henshaw 2d

I also looked at the actual document D231M /T739- Indenture 6 March 9 Queen Anne (1710)
at Derbyshire Record Office. The content is as quoted on p.4 of my last 'Janney' report, but
'Cromwillies' is a mis-transcription- the place name is clearly 'Cromwithies'.There is further detail but nothing of further reference to the Janney family. Incidentally 'rent payable to Benjamin Jolliffe of Colton(?) co. Worcester' is also mentioned.
As previously mentioned,Cromwithies is on Ipstones Edge. Quite by chance, recently when looking through papers relating to another Ipstones family,I found an extract from the 1871 census(ref. RG10/2887 f.115) which lists 'Jennys Barn' as next in the schedule after Cromwithies. A Thomas Shemilt and his family was living at Jennys Barn. My husband then recalled that he took some photos of the ruins of this house back in 2009 just before we moved to Spain when researching for a descendant of the Shemilt family-if you would be interested in seeing these please let me know. At this point I haven't investigated further so it is not clear whether this converted barn has a direct connection to the Janney family.
