Burdujeni

Burdujeni was the town in northern Romania that was the home of the Thornstein family before they came to England. In 1981 Brana Thorn interviewed her grandfather Isaac Thornstein. Then, very recently, I contacted Brian Cooper, husband of Brana's second cousin Brenda, who kindly provided me with details of some of the births and deaths of the family, and this information led me to present all that we know in the form of this blog. If you can provide further information, documents or photographs we would be delighted to add them to this site.

Information from Burdujeni records provided by Brian Cooper

I have rearranged in date order. I have translated the word 'sin' as son/daughter of. I have added in brackets necessary relationships.

Interpretation

We have Mendel Faibish and his wife Brana living in Burdujeni in the High St, very close to the border with Austria-Hungary. Brana is buried at Edmonton. Manny remembered her as a very old lady heating a banana to eat on the range. On her tombstone she was 81 in 1942 meaning she was born in 1861 more or less. Her husband Mendel ben Faibish was 22 in 1883, so he was born in about 1861 as well, though the records say that Brana was two years younger than her husband. As for the name Faibish, uncle Philip Thorne once told me about thirty years ago that the family surname was Faibish in Burdujeni, and that it was Filescu in Romanian. Torenstein/Thornstein (and many other variations) it seems was acquired when they came to England. In fact, Jewish families appear not to all have had surnames, but were still using patronymics, so Mendel's father was Faibish, and Brana's father was Zalman
So, Brana and Mendel had a son in 1883 called Zalman Mendel. Zalman is the same as Solomon: this was grandpa Isaac’s older brother. He was presumably named after his mother’s father, Zalman Leib.
In 1885 Brana gave birth to their daughter Rivka. Her father was by now a shoemaker. The record suggests that Mendel’s father’s name was Faibish, and that the family were still using patronymics rather than surnames (ie A ben B). Rivka died in 1895 when she was nine years old. My daughter Lili was named for her.
Two years later, in 1888, Brana gave birth to their daughter Sheina Feiga. By this time Mendel was no longer a soldier but a tailor, and in five years he had aged from 22 to 30. Obviously ages were approximate. Celebrating birthdays was not done in the past in the Jewish community. She was known in England as Fanny, and she was mother to uncle Harold Leigh. Harold had two sons with his wife Uschi: Ian married to Joanna with two sons, Dan and Ben. and Adam married to Hannah with Sophie, Matthew and Jake.
In 1890 Mendel and Brana’s fourth child, a son called Itzik ben Mendel was born—Grandpa Isaac. His date of birth is given as 18 December 1890. Grandpa Isaac always celebrated his birthday on December 25th. To complicate things, until WW1 Romania followed the Julian (Eastern Orthodox) calendar, so that the day on which he was born was December 30 in England.
In 1896 their son Moishe was born, and in 1899 their daughter Gitla. Her father is described as being 42 years old and a shoemaker again. Gitla was known as Kitty in England and was mother to Lilian Kirsch, and Peter and another brother and sister. Moishe died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919. He may also have had consumption. His widow Leah never remarried. Their daughter Renee maried Lou (Ludwig) Heymann, a German refugee. They had no children, and may have lived in Germany.
There was another daughter Hetty, probably born in 1887.  She lived in St Mark's St, Aldgate, close to Isaac. She married Sam Segal. She had two children, Kitty and Manny. Kitty married Sid Aitman and had two children Jeffrey, and jennifer who died of leukaemia aged 11. Manny married Lilian but had no children. Jeffrey married Esther, a Frenchwoman, and had children.

The Thornstein Family

Written by Brana Thorn in 1981, from an interview with Isaac Thornstein.
I have added information from public records wherever possible in square brackets. Please note that this is oral history, which I have attempted where possible to corroborate with actual  'facts' in the form of data from public records.

My great great grandfather was called Yachil Favish. He was a very stern man and was married five times. He had at least five children called Dovid, Berl, Malka, Machlis and Emanuel, who was my great grandfather. David had two sons, Baruch and Reuven (Barnet). They lived in America. Reuven came over to see grandpa ten years ago. Berl had two sons, Malka went to America, and Machlis married twice and ended up in Israel.
Then there was my great grandfather Emanuel. He was sent to cheder by his father Yachil, and he fainted there becaus ehe hadn't had any breakfast. They called the doctor, and when Yachil found out he threw out his second wife for neglecting his children. Emanuel's own mother died when he was four years old. He became a ladies' tailor in Burdujeni, a market town. He died young in his 50s from appendicitis, as he didn't want an operation. [To be fair, surgery wasn't generally available at that time for appendicitis.] He married Brana from Magalen [?] who was an only daughter. Her father, who was also a tailor, was killed by hooligans. Her mother was called Gitel. Brana lived to a ripe old age outliving her husband by thirty years, and daddy can even remember her. She was a short, bent-over little woman and never needed to wear glasses. She used to like her banana cooked on the range during Shabbat. When the lights came on again on a Saturday night daddy used to walk her home as she didn't like buses. At one point when the family lived in Lindley Street she used to live with them.
Emanuel and Brana had Solomon (the eldest), Fanny (Feigel), Hetty, Moishe, Gitel and of course my grandpa Isaac. Solomon married Betsy [Marcus in 1908]. He came over to England first out of all the family. He was going to go to America, but the friend he was travelling with had bad eyes and so they wouldn't let him go, so Solomon decided to stay with his friend in England. He had three daughters and three [actually two] sons: Kitty who married Lou Slobodov [Kate Tornstein married Samuel Slobodoff in 1933] and had two children, a boy  [Martin N. Slobodoff was born 11 August 1939 and died 30 October 1994], and a daughter [Pamela L. Slobodoff was born in 1934] who married a teacher [actually an ex-civil servant] and has two children.
Minny, who married Morris Waldman [in 1947] has two daughters [?], Betsy, and Francis who was at school with Leah. [Francis and James Waldman born 1948, Betsy born 1957.]
Sarah, or Cookie, who married a teacher [Alan Braham] and has a son [Lawrence B. Braham born 1944]; Philip [born 1909] married Mamie and their son married and lives in Stanmore; Mick who married and has two daughters, Brenda [born 1945] who was head girl at Ilford CHS, and Sylvia [born 1941].
Solomon had two shops, one in East Ham, the other in Forest Gate. He left £100,000 to his grandchildren. He was sensible in his finances. He made some money by making an investment buying up some cloth at the start of WW2.
Feigel married Israel Lazarus [in 1912 as Fanny Tornstein] (they used to live round the corner from us in Stradbroke Grove). They had five children: Harold, Markie, Phil, Lou and Sarah. Harold married Uschi, changed their name to Leigh, and had two sons Adam and Ian.
Fanny née Tornstein and her husband Israel Lazarus c.1953 [Courtesy of Stephanie Singer]

Markie [Morris] married [Leah Borstein/Bernstein in 1919] and had Shirley who married Michael who works for ICI and they had a child.
Phil married Pearl and they had Stephanie and Helen.
Lou married Lily and had Gerald, who married one of the daughters of Barnets the caterers, and they have four or five children.
Sarah [born 1915]. [She died in childbirth and left one son, Malcolm.]
Update by Stephanie Singer, née Leigh:
Her son Mark had one daughter Shirley, who has three children (not one). Her son Lou had two sons. Gerald, who has four children and two adopted children; Stuart, who has three children. Shirley, Stuart and I (Stephanie) are all named after Mark's deceased TWIN sister Sarah, who indeed died in childbirth.

Fanny's son Philip had my sister Helen and me. She lives in Israel, is married to Roby and has three children (Tali, Keren and Gideon). I am married to Laurence, and have three children also (Joshua, Miriam and Rafael).
Hetty [Ita] married Sam(uel) Segal [in 1916]. They had Manny, Kitty and Moishe. [Abraham born 1917, Katie 1918, Hetty Oronstein 1919?, Hyman 1921?, Benjamin Haronstein 1924?]. Manny married Lilian and had no children. Kitty married Sid Aitman [Katie Segal married Sidney Aitman in 1943], and had Geoffrey [Jeffrey B. Aitman born 1945] who married Esther [Benabou?], a Frenchwoman, and a daughter who died young of leukaemia. [James Bruce 1972 and Josette Bettina 1974?].
Moishe, who in his 20s got pneumonia, married Leah and had Renée [born 1920] who married Lou Garner, and they have no children.
Gitel (Kitty) [Kate Tornstein born 1911] married Jack Felberg [Katey Tornstein married Jack Felberg in 1927]. She was the youngest daughter and the longest surviving member of Grandpa's close family. (I saw her in a home before she died.) They had Manny [Manny H. born 1929, died 2017], Peter [Peter P. born 1933, died 2018], Pamela [Esther p. born 1936] and Lily [Lillian born 1938]. Manny married Beaty [Kay] [Emanuel H. Felberg married Beatrice Kay alias Reinhold in 1953], a German woman and had Marion [Marion S. born 1955], and a son Simon [Simon M. Felberg born 1961]. Peter married Josie [Peter P. Felberg married Jose Harris in 1955] and had two girls. Pamela married an American soldier she met at Hillel House, and now lives in the USA with a son and daughter. Lily married Sidney Kirsch [Lilian S. Felberg married Sydney Kirsch in 1958] and they have three daughters (one is called Brana) [Tina 1960, Gail 1964, Bernice 1965].
Finally my grandpa isaac who married leah Weiss from Braila near Bucharest. He stayed at home till twelve or thirteen and studied at religious school. He left to work in a town as an apprentice to a tailor, and lived in. At sixteen he went home to his parents and as there was no work he wrote to his brother Solomon who was in England at this time. Solomon sent £5 to Isaac, allowing him to get into England. When grandpa got to the British customs the customs officer couldn't understand what his surname was as my grandpa couldn't write or speak any English to understand what was going on, and the officer told him to take the surname of the man in front of him in the queue [a standard fable for the majority of Jewish immigrant families at that time]. That is how our family name started off as Toronstein, not Favish. Over the years the name has changed from Toronstein to Thornstein to Thorns or Thorne or Thorn or Toron.
My grandpa started work as a taylor and got his own shop in bermondsey when he was only twenty. He earned money to bring over the rest of the family, his father, mother, Gitel, hetty and Moishe, whilst Solomon brought over Fanny. Isaac married at 24 or 25, only after his eldest sister had got married. he met his wife and knew straight away that he wanted to marry her as she was a good, tall, strong woman (a starke).

Grandmother's Side

Leah Weiss, my grandmother, died when she was about 40 from high blood pressure and sugar diabetes. She lived with her family near Braila near Bucharest [200km away, 4 hours by train]. Her father was called Alec Weiss (or Wise) and he was a bootmaker; her mother was called Frimme, and she died of a stroke. They had eight children.
The family came to England purely by chance. Leah's older sister Polly was going out with a nice rich boy. His parents sent him away to England to prevent him marrying Polly, who wasn't quite good enough even though she was very pretty. Leah's mother then came to England with Polly aged 16, and Markie, six months, to look for the boy, but his parents had already sent him the money to go to America. Frimme, Polly and Markie stayed in England anyway, and the rest of the family came over to join them.
Alec and Frimme's eight children were called Nathan, Jacob, Markie, Rivke, Rosa, Sarah, Polly and my grandmother Leah.
Nathan married Esther [Nathan Wise married Esther Moscovitch 1908] and had Alec, Frank [born 1915], Moishe [Morris born 1914] and Becky. Alec married and had a son. Frank married Ann and they now live in Wanstead; their daughter Carol lives in Stradbroke Grove. Moishe married Beatie [Morris Wise married Betty Secunda in 1931] whose relative Harry Secunda married Becky [Betty Wise married Harris Secunda in 1929]. Harry and Becky had Michael and Marie [Marie Secunda born 1936, Albert M. Secunda born 1944]. Michael married twice, and Marie who became a social worker had triplets and a son.[Marie Secunda married Brian H. Mercer in 1960.] {Neil M. Mercer was born 1963, Anna, Karin and Melissa were born 1964.]
Jacob married Cary who was from English Jewish parents [Asher Jacob Wise married Caroline Abrahams in 1908]. They had five children: Leah, Elfy, Frances [Fanny Wise born 1919], Ray [Rachel Wise born 1913] and Alec [Alec Wise born 1916]. Leah married a fireman and has two daughters. Elfie married Mick Stebbing. [Hetty Wyse/Wise married Michael Stebbing/Rudnitzky in 1934.] Frances had bad eyes and didn't marry. Ray taught daddy how to dance. Alec (sergeant-major) married Frankel's daughter and they have a son Howard Wise who has two children. [Alec Wise married Deborah Finkel in 1935.] Markie married Esther of Forest Gate [Mark Wise married Estera Vadrarin in 1926]. he died young of a heart attack in Windsor Road, Forest Gate. They had two daughters: Frances married Sid [Frances Wise married Sydney Dean in 1948] (I met them once in the Red House) and the second daughter married a Polish man.
Rivka married Goldberg and had David, Millie and Betty. None of them got married, and Betty is alive today in 1981.
Rosa married Lou Caspar [Leon Casper married Rose Wyse in 1913] and they have two sons and two daughters called Ray and Frances [Rachel Casper born 1914 and Frances Casper born 1915].
Sarah married Solly Makovich who is still living in 1981. They had Stanley, Alec and Frimme. Stanley lives in South Africa. Alec, who changed his surname to Moss, married another one of Frankel's daughters. They have two daughters. Avril married a film producer and lives in Hollywood. [Avril J. Moss born 1950, mother née Franklin.] [Avril J. Moss married Anthony D, Klinger in 1972.]
Frimme married David Silberstein who was a waiter and died in 1980. They had a son and their daughter married a pharmacist.
Polly got married and went to America before 1914 and was never heard of again. [Polly Wise married Samuel Sint in 1912.] She had two children in England before she went. [Nathan Sint born 1913, Sylvia Sint born 1919.]
Leah [Wyse] married Isaac Thornstein in 1914. She eventually died of a stroke [in 1942 aged 46]. They had Manny (daddy) who married Hannelore Leyens. [Emanuel Thorn/Thornstein married Laura/Hannelore Leyens in 1947.] Alec married Annie Alowsky [Aleck Thornstein/Toronstein married Annie Olofsky/Arlofskie in 1943 and had Shelley [born 1957] and Lorraine [Lorraine R, Thornstein born 1952]. Renee married Monty [Shaw] [Renee Toranstein/Thornstein married Monty Schwartz/Shaw in 1949] and had Alvin and Linda, They had another daughter Frances who died in infancy. Phil married Anita Rufsky [in 1949] [and had Ian in 1951 and Lawrence in 1956].
