Van Hier: Gioacchino Hierschel de Minerbi 1834–1905

My webhost deleted my site about this Triestine artist without warning. I am attempting to recreate the site here, but unfortunately I only have the images and not the text. At the moment I have uploaded the images but they need sorting and labelling, and the images need captions.

Gioacchino Hierschel de Minerbi

Gioacchino Hierschel de Minerbi was born 18th March 1834 in Trieste, then the port of the Austrian Empire, the son of Leone Hierschel, a member of one of Trieste's leading Jewish families, and Clementina Minerbi. He had a sister, Ernesta, born in 1854, and also a Clara Zoe and possibly an Elodia; and a brother, Oscar, the diplomat. He trained as an artist, and spent his twenties and thirties painting in Holland, Dordrecht and Rotterdam and studying at the Academy in The Hague. It was whilst living here that he adopted the name Joachim Van Hier, signing all his works 'Van Hier'. He seems to have spent the latter years of his life in London, producing large numbers of picture postcards for Raphael Tuck and Sons painting under the name of Professor Van Hier, and working in the style of the Impressionists, helping to popularise their style to a wider audience. He specialised in sunsets, river scenes, often the Thames, views of Venice, dramatic stormy sea scenes and rural landscapes, with distinctive impasto techniques in his skies, and a typical use of yellow, and an individualistic representation of the human figure foreshadowing Lowry. He was living in St James, London, according to the 1881 census. He married Hannah Rawlinson in Brighton in 1893. He died in London on 23rd February 1905.

Addendum: I recently discovered that he married a second time at the end of his life. I shall try to add the details when I am in better health.

Postscript 2019: I suspect that he was married but once to Hannah Rawlinson. I think Selina Curtis married Frederick Derviller.

La Famiglia Hierschel

Federica Vetta, in «Shalom Trieste»

Obituary: Carlo Alberto Chiesa
Nicolas Barker

MILAN is a businesslike city; its streets do not encourage you to dally. But, as in other Italian cities, facades conceal graceful courtyards or, beyond, hidden gardens. 11 Via Bigli is like this, except that on the far side of its courtyard the door gives on to, first, an anteroom featuring a large wooden architectural model of a Renaissance cupola and with beautiful documents framed on the walls, and then a large room shelved on three sides, and dominated by a long high table, strewn with books, carefully chosen to catch your eye or taste, and other objects, some exquisitely made of glass. This, for more than 40 years, was the "Studio" of Carlo Alberto Chiesa, for almost as long one of the dominant figures in the European old book trade. He was born in 1926, the son of Pietro Chiesa, who was a famous designer of glass (hence the pieces on the table), a commanding figure in the applied arts and founder of the "Fontana Arte" group. He was also a great collector of everything except books, and his son inherited his connoisseur's eye.
Growing up in the Second World War, a law student just after it, Chiesa found his vocation at Paris, whither he went in 1949. He haunted the Parisian bookshops, notably that of Marc Loliee, who became his friend and mentor. He earned the respect of the legendary Galanti, then in his apartment in Montmartre, where every piece of furniture, even the bath, useless since there was nothing to heat the water, was full of books. Chiesa had an intuitive sense of the importance and tactile qualities of books, so much so that he could buy a book in one shop and sell it on to another, making a profit on what he could see and others had missed. In 1953 he returned home to Milan, first to the Piazza Sant' Erasmo, and then in 1956 to the Via Bigli. It was never, in any ordinary sense, a shop. As in Paris, his idea was to find the books he liked and then to put them in the hands of those who would appreciate them as much as he did. His discretion, equally, was complete; without concealing his customers' identity, he never discussed their affairs or interests unless required to do so. But no major buyer could afford to ignore him, since his grasp of the market, not only for Italian books of all periods (though that was his staple) but any fine book, was powerful. If private collectors benefited most from his taste and ability, he also admired the great public collections. As a loyal Milanese, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana had first call on his expertise, and successive Prefects owed much to his help. The late Franklin D. Murphy esteemed him, and the wonderful library of early Italian books that bears Murphy's name at the University of California at Los Angeles owes much to Chiesa's wise counsel. Since the late 1950s and the Dyson Perrins sales, Chiesa was a notable presence at almost every important sale, although he disliked publicity and preferred to buy as well as sell privately. But Christie's sale of the Feltrinelli collection two months ago was a challenge he could not refuse; though mortally ill, he triumphed once again. Chiesa did not deal just in grand books; he could see the delight of quiet humble ephemera. It was the same with people; he was hospitable to all, though his first love was for his wife and family, with whom he went climbing in the Dolomites every year. Nicolas Barker Carlo Alberto Chiesa, bookseller: born Milan 17 September 1926; married 1961 Elena de Hierschel de' Minerbi (four sons); died Milan 25 January 1998.

Josef Ressel

Text je z převážné části upravenou verzí úvodní stati publikace Dr. Jiřího Charváta a Mgr. Pavla Kobetiče "Josef Ressel a Chrudim", vydané roku 1987 chrudimským muzeem; stať o literárním ztvárnění osobnosti J. Ressela zpracoval PhDr. Miroslav Bastl, CSc.,

Dle matriky pokřtěných římskokatolického (tehdy děkanského) úřadu v Chrudimi se Josef Ludvík František Ressel narodil dne 29. června 1793 v domě čp. 124/I v Chrudimi v Široké ulici. 16. 2. 1795) a Marie (nar. 15. 5. 1797).

Summary by Ladislav Rezucha:

The article is a biography of Josef Ressel (Czech inventor, who invented screw propeller for boats).

In the summer of 1861 Dr Joachim, knight Hierschel-Minerbi, chairman of the Ressel Monument Committee in Trieste (now Italy), was invited with two other Committee members and Ressel's son Jindrich (or Friedrich in German) by the town of Chrudim for unveiling a memorial plaque on the house where Ressel was born. This large celebration took place on 29/06/1861 - the day of his birthday - which ended with a banquet on Strelecky Island. On this occasion, Jindrich Ressel was offered Honorary Freemanship.

Some clarification: Ressel lived in Trieste where he carried out his experiments but is buried in Ljubljana (capital of Slovenia), where he died during an official trip. Many of Trieste's citizens were honoured by the fact that they lived in the same town as such a great inventor and wanted to erect a monument to him. They elected a Monument Committee, who failed to carry out the task, because of the opposition of people who considered Ressel as Austrian and the enemy. That is why his bronze monument was erected in Vienna instead.

Josef Ludvík František Ressel (in Czech) or Joseph Ludwig Franz Ressel (in German) or Josip Ressel (in Slovenian and Croatian) (June 29, 1793- October 9, 1857) was a Bohemian forest warden and the inventor of the ship's propeller.

Ressel was born in Chrudim, Bohemia, and worked as a forest engineer in Motovun, Istria (modern-day Croatia). He worked in Kostanjevica on the Krka river (modern-day Slovenia then Austrian Empire) where he tested his ship propellers for the first time. He relocated to Trieste (modern-day Italy, then Austrian Empire) where his tests were successful. He was awarded the propeller patent in 1827. He modified a small steam-powered boat Civeta by 1829 and test-drove it in the Trieste harbor at six knots before the steam conduits exploded. Because of this misfortune, the police banned further testing.

As early as 1804, the American John Fitch is credited with a screw propeller, which was unsuccessful. In 1836, the Englishman Francis Petit Smith tested a screw propeller similar to Ressel's. The first cross-Atlantic journey of a ship powered by a screw-propeller was in 1839, with Ressel's screw improved by the Swedish engineer John Ericsson. The propeller screw design stabilized in the 1880s.

Among other Ressel's inventions are pneumatic post and ball and cylinder bearings. He was granted numerous patents during his life.

He died in Ljubljana and is buried in the Navje cemetery.

150. Todestag von Josef Ressel

Josef Ressel, Erfinder und Forstmann, starb vor 150 Jahren am 9. Oktober 1857.

His Landlord

Richard Drummond appears to have been a scion of the family of Hawthorndean or Hawthornden, near Edinburgh. The Drummonds were baronets.

"HAWTHORNDEAN, a hamlet in the county Edinburgh, Scotland, 6 miles S. of Edinburgh. It is a station on the Edinburgh and Peebles section of the North British railway. Hawthorndean House is situated on the river Esk, near Roslin Castle, and belongs to the Drummonds, whose ancient seat is still standing. It was visited by Queen Victoria in 1848, and contains some fine portraits and the dress worn by Charles Stuart in 1745. It was here that Ben Jonson visited W. Drummond, the poet and historian."
