When I asked my grandmother about her grandparents, she told me that her mother's parents had died young and that an aunt had cared for her mother and two other sisters. Although my grandmother never knew her maternal grandparents, she did know that her grandfather was of Scottish extraction, and that her grandmother's origins were Welsh.
My great grandmother, Georgina Henrietta Thomson, married on 19 April 1899. She was three months pregnant, expecting my grandmother, who was born 8 October 1899. There are several photographs, that I have been able to copy over the years, but although I recognise some, I cannot identify all those present. The first photograph shows considerably more guests than the second. I can identify most of the people in the second photograph, but none of the additional people beyond immediate family members. Her sisters Jemimah and Mary Jane are there, with their husbands. There are seven adult women, two adult men, and two children who are unidentified.
I have been aware too, from more recent discoveries, that somehow Georgina's father was possible a 'black sheep' of the family, though it has proved impossible to identify the cause of this. His father's will left his inheritance in the control of his brothers. Or was it just that he was not yet an adult? The wording seems quite clear that he was not approved of by his father, however.
I am surprised to discover that at the time of his death Robert Thomson was living in Royle Green Road. I thought that my great grandmother lived in St Paul's Place, Withington. I wonder if that was the home of her mother's sister. I believe her grandfather, William Henry Davies, lived at that address and that his daughter Henrietta died there in 1864. I see that Robert's nephew, Frederick Vernon Thomson, was with him at the time of his death in Manchester's Royal Infirmary.
I wonder who in the Thomson, Davies and Neild families was alive in 1899 and could have attended the wedding. That might help suggest identifications of who is in the photographs.
The family tree at the beginning of J.J. Thomson's biography is interesting, in that he obviously knew of his uncle Robert, but comments that he 'married late in life' and that 'he had no profession'. J.J. was born in 1856 and would have been 43 at the time of his cousin Georgina's wedding and living in Cambridge, and unlikely to attend. His mother Emma would have been very elderly — she died two years later. Robert's brother James of Liverpool had died in 1879, seven years after J.J.'s father. It is not surprising then if members of the Thomson family did not attend. A possible candidate is J.J.'s brother Frederick, who was with his uncle Robert at the time of his death in 1892, and who would have been 40 at the time of the wedding. He could be the person with the goatee beard in the tweed suit.
J.J.'s account of his family is illuminating for what he includes and for its omissions. What he records is pretty accurate, but there are many lacunae. As regards my own branch of the family, although he knew that his uncle Robert had married, it was not that 'late': Robert was 35 and his bride was 31. Surprisingly he does not seem to have been aware that Robert left three daughters, though surely his brother Frederick knew, as he was present at their father's death. They were young, aged just 16, 13 and 11 at his death, and their mother died just two years later leaving them orphaned.

Curiously, when I applied for a copy of Robert August Thomson's willI was initially told that there wasn't one, but my cousin Irene McIntyre corrected that. Just as curiously, the will seems rather a waste of space. One executor died and the other refused to act, perhaps for a good reason. As for the contents of the will itself, it appears to request that anything he had should be invested to provide a twice-yearly income to his widow, but nothing else. He wrote the will in 1883, when his daughters were young, and died when they were still young: 17, 14 and 12. When he died the will was apparently effectively side-stepped so that his wife sorted out their affairs. Sadly, she died just over a year later, early in 1894.
